I just got my chinchilla two days ago and the first day he made this laughing type sound when I gave him a piece of wood to chew on. He did it a few more times within the hour but then was silent. Then today he did it again today when I put a box in the cage for him to hide in. I've checked in my book about chinchillas but I can't figure out what that sound means.:hmm:

It sounds like he may be barking out of fear. I would stop adding to his cage and only stick my hands in for feeding/ changing water. I would imagine the poor guy is really scared with all the changes going to a new home and just needs time to adapt. Until he does I would keep him in a quiet place and just talk to him in a calming voice. Once he's used to you in a few weeks he should be friendlier.

I agree with Jaz, sounds like it could be barking. Does it sound like a dog toy squeaking?

Here is a really good site with some noises chins make. Try to see if you can match the noise he's making with one from the site and I think they have little blurbs of what the noises mean.

Thanks for the good advice, Jazicat. I'll certainly do that.

According to that site I was most likely scaring him. I feel so sorry. Thanks again to both of you:hug2:

I just got my first chinchillas eight months ago so I've recently been where you are. Once your little one is used to you I think you will find that he will love being around you but not held. They will perch on your arm or shoulder but you have to be careful of them falling off.

I also think that you are going to do great with your baby because you cared enough to ask the question. ;)

I'd also love to know his name and eventually pictures.

agreed1 he's probably barking .. mine bark at me once in awhile but not liek were. butons barked at me constanly when i treid getting her out but she just jumps out . but they bark at eachother now and that's funny

I agree.

The breeder I got my chins from actually had in her care sheet/contract that handling them for the first 48(?) hours is not recommended....so they can get use to their surroundings.

It took my ebony several months before he warmed up to anyone..
