When choosing my first chin, is it best for me to get an adult or a baby?
HTML:
Which is easier to bond with and get comfortable and which is easier to take care of? Or does it matter?

Older chins can be just as lovable and easy to bond with as kits, and in fact, sometimes are even easier. With kits you have to have special spacing in your cage bars, be careful of too much wheeling in a little one, be even more careful of how you handle them, etc.

If you have the opportunity to go to a breeder, go visit. I always tell people not to have a preconceived notion of what type of chin you want, unless you just have your heart set on a particular color. It's really easy to run to the kits and oooh and aaah all over them, but just down the row there is a wonderful adult chin that would love to have a fantastic pet home as well. They tend to get overlooked though as, understandably, people are instantly drawn to the little bitties.

I don't think there is a best age for any animal, just your opinion. Young chins are adorable, don't get me wrong. My girl came to me as a adult, about 6 years old I think, and I wouldn't change it for the world. Granted she's my first chin, so I guess my opinion doesn't count, but I deffiently will be getting adult chins in the future if I can care for another.

Definitely agree with tunes, older animals seem to get over looked more often then not, and they want loving homes too. There is no wrong answer though ;)

Thank you for your input! My easiest option is to adopt one from Petsmart because there are like no breeders in my area that I can find. So, clearly, those are adults. It would take more work/travel to find a kit and I'm thinking it might be best to go with an adult, at least for my first chin. :)

Petsmart chins may look full grown, but they are generally about 6-7 months old. Still a baby in terms of attitude and friendliness.
In my experience, chins over 5 years old are more relaxed, more tame, etc. And since the lifespan is so long (15-20 years) you would still have them a long time.

It's your choice, but if you are new to chins, don't get a BABY baby, they are wild and fearless, and it's a constant struggle to keep them safe and alive, lol.

Where are you located? You can't walk down the street without tripping over a breeder. I bet we can find you one.

Nope. They are given no documentation on the chin's birthday or even the chin itself (where it came from, etc.). If they do tell you an age, they are just guessing.
Hmmm. :hmm: Well, that stinks. I'm not wanting one more than a couple years old. But maybe the ones there are around that age. Because Petsmart is still most likely where I'll be getting mine.
