A woman recently moved in Quebec from Switzerland and sold a chin to someone I know claiming it to be 'champagne' mutation, which is Wellman beige for us if I am not mistaken. It does look exactly what it is supposed to according to the Basic Genetic book of Alice Kline. In Europe, that mutation is supposed to be deceased almost, only 10% of the champagne mutation is still there. As the pedigree is in another language, it is not possible to understand really the information. Would you know anything about that?

Is the champagne mutation having two different 'origins', one lineage from Europe and one here in north america? Or were some of the original chins exported?

All right well since my question seems to be quite a puzzle, do you know any good breeder who's working with wellman beige that I can contact?

Serena works with the Sullivan beige. Wellman beige is a different mutation, and had been called champagne. They should have a dark brown eye like a standard rather than the pink or red eye of the other beiges. To my knowledge, there is no record of what happened to the Wellman's herd or whether or not they exported any animals. However, another dark-eyed recessive beige popped up in Poland four years after the Wellman beige first appeared, but it was theorized that it was the same mutation as the Wellman and was given the same genetic symbol, though I doubt their relatedness was explored.

In short - there was a line of dark-eyed recessive beiges in Europe that may or may not be Wellmans.

All right.

Well it does have dark eyes like standards. Seems like it could be well be a champagne mutation. Quite rare hun! I don't know if that lady will bring back some more chins from Switzerland when she finally moves for good, could be a good opportunity to get to know that mutation.

The Rzewski Beige had dark eyes and originated in Poland in approx the late 50s, the Wellman Beige came from NY around approx the same time from what my mentor said.

Yes but that polish beige you're talking about has long disappeared. In fact it did not live long due to the lack of genetic knowledge of the people who could not keep it from one generation to another.
