Hello to everyone. This morning our darling sweet little Loren took a very bad turn and after rushing him to the vets they told us he was dying, it was so sudden. we had to have him put down. we are heart broken, this pair of chillies was our first pair and he was such a special chinny from what i have gathered. Loren was so affectionate and loving to all people and we are heart broken. we had re homed him but believe him to have been about 3. Our grump antisocial chinny, his cage mate (probably not his brother because loren was a common grey and Curtis is a pink white) is now alone and although they were not close i am convinced that he is distressed, i could have sworn that when we let him out he was searching for Loren. does anyone have any suggestions as to what to do with Curtis? obviously we want him to stay with us but what about another cage mate? it is so hard to think of replacing loren but we want to do what is best for Curtis and not have a distressed pet on our hands. he doesnt like people so much and is quite a loner but did like to cuddle up with loren and we dont want him to be lonely. please help.

Sorry for your loss - did they give a reason?
Some chins get over a loss quickly, some are heartbroken, and some couldn't care less - totally depends on the chin!
Give him some xtra loving, as he might respond a little more, right now!

he had some problems with his teeth and he had been under the weather, we had him booked in for some dental work this morn but he started fitting, the just said he is obviously dying and there must be more going wrong than his teeth. they said it was too late for blood tests and that he wouldnt make it through if they opened him up. all they could do was take his pain away. i will give him some TLC the best i can (he doesnt like to be touched!)

All animals can mourn. If your mate left one day and didn't come back you'd know they were gone. Chins can be sad too.

He probably was out looking for his cagemate. They really do form a very strong attachment to one another. Sometimes losing a mate will make a chin friendlier towards humans. Right now you are the only one who will give him any form of social interaction, so please spend as much time with him as you can...give him lots of scratches and talk to him as much as you can.

I'm so sorry that you lost your chin, that's very sad.

thank you for your kind words. does anyone have any suggestions as to what to do with a new cage mate? perhaps a female or a young? he is a large, male that likes to throw his weight around but not generally agressive to his cage mate

I'm so sorry for your loss.

Perhaps for now, you should just get him a snuggle friend, a stuffed animal of some sort, until you both decide whether he needs a cagemate or not. You can make one out of fleece and stuff it with fleece as well.

I wouldn't rush into getting him a cagemate at this point, especially a female cagemate, unless you want to deal with all the issues of breeding.

I'm sorry for your loss.

I agree with a snuggle friend. This might make him feel better and not that lonely.

So sorry for your loss - Try a snuggle buddy and more attention. Even though he doesn't like to be held - talk to him in his cage. Chins love to be talk to. If that doesn't work try a young male kit. Not that it matters but the 2 could have been brothers even if one was a gray and the other pink-white

I am so sorry for the loss of your little one. Its obvious how much he was loved and cherished.
