Ok, so earlier today I posted a question about Tinacin because I'm treating a mild fungus right now on my chin. I got a ton of really great feedback- all things that I will try.
I went home- Baxter is doing great. He was happy to see me and came to the edge of the cage for affection. So I spent a little bit of time just sitting next to his cage. I put his dust bath in there just for fun. He rolled around - everything was as usual. Well, I'm not quite sure how to describe this next part without being slightly crude...:err:
He got up on top of his dust bath and was grooming himself all over - VERY cute as usual. Then all of the sudden, it was like something came over him. He started to kind of shudder a little bit while extending his hind legs making himself a little bit taller - almost like he was stretching so it wasn't that weird until he stopped and started to clean his... himself ;). He was down there for a while, so I started to wonder. I crouched down to see what he was doing... I've read a little on how to check for hair rings... kinda weird. But my chinchilla knows how to do it. he had that jam fully extended and completely in his mouth. I have NEVER seen him do that before and I can only think of two reasons for it:
1. He did it because there's something wrong - possibly related to the fungus?
2. He was just grooming and cleaning himself and just feels REALLY comfortable around me

Weird?? Or comfortable?

yeah, one of those joys of owning a boy chinchilla. He was probably just cleaning himself and boy chins do that quite often sometimes.

These posts always make me glad I have girls :D

Lol! I couldn't agree more. Boy chinchillas scare me for this reason. lol!

Chin porn - gotta love it. :)

Oh, and don't worry. When the mood strikes him, he'll feel just as comfortable around anybody else too -- like when you have company, or a small child wants to see the pretty chinchilla...............

Haha, sounds normal but even if they do the "cleaning" themselves, you still need to check them yourself every month or so to be safe. Sometimes they cannot get it off, and that is when they usually spend extra time down there. Haha, the joys of boys.

I am so glad I posted this just for these responses. Hilarious. Tunes, funniest thing I've ever heard. I was actually laughing out loud. Awesome.

Uh, it was a HUGE shock the first time I saw my one boy doing it. Thank goodness he has stopped doing it, well at least in front of me, chinnie porn!

It still is a shock to me when I see one of my boys do it. Its like a train wreck tho 'cause i just cant look away. I guess I just can't imagine how for such a small animal their "package" is quite large! :blushing:

Ooooh, I hate when they do that!

Most uncomfortable for me...when my Petie was an only chin, years ago, he finally apparently felt REALLY comfortable with me and attempted to "mount" my arm a few times. The first time I thought he was just trying to get a good grip to climb up, but then he started going at it like a dog on a leg. I bought him a friend shortly after (not so he could mate, but just for companionship). He never did it again once he had a buddy.

I also think it's funny when anything happens ie; I put him back in the cage, or someone kacks at him. First thing they do is look down there for a half second to see if his penis is still attached. Do your boys do that?

I really don't know what is wrong with humans - Sex is normal Animals don't have any shame and it is all very normal so why to humans freak out when they see it??? Body parts are body parts - big deal

I'm not sure anyone said that sex is abnormal. I haven't been under the impression so far that people are freaking out. I think it's fair to say that seeing a rodent swallowing his own jimmy is comical and somewhat surprising. I, for one, had never seen it until yesterday.

people are 'shocked' and glad they don't have a male chin because of it. Like it is something people can't deal with - why?? why is such a big deal - yes, it is funny not shocking

i think "shocked" is just a figure of speech......obviously I am not literally shocked when I see that. I guess cause I dont have one, i find it more facinating. now if we were talking breasts or something girly, i probably wouldnt say anything.
i think we are all just having fun with the fact that in comparison to a chinchillas whole body, their "package" is quite large. And the fact that they can do what they do well perhaps it may make some of the men a bit envious. ;)

Ain't that the truth!!

I suppose it's because even the most hardened of us would find it disquieting to see a man bent over servicing himself in public, no? Then again, I'm not a huge fan of PDAs in public, so maybe it's more annoying to me.

As far as the animals go, I am always amused when a new chin owner sees it for the first time and gets a bit nervous. I know the first time I saw it, I did a double take. Same thing when I see the chins mating. I always wonder if I should walk away and give them a little privacy. :)

There isn't a whole lot of information on the web about males pleasuring or cleaning themselves; at least, not where most people look. The usual sites are too busy telling them to feed their chins fruits and veggies and that all chins will die if they don't have at LEAST 2 hours of run time a day, a cage that is 6 foot tall, and raisins every 5 minutes.

Before I got my 2 current male chins I had my Whiskers who was purchased at a pet store with 1 of their handbooks on chins. For over 4.5 years that he was with us, he never exhibited this type of behavior. So when my now 16 month old showed us hist "talent" for the first time, I was shocked to say the least because I thought a worm had gotten into their cage and CJ was eating it. I posted about it here when it happened to me and I received a lot of good info along with some chuckles.

You know whats really hillarious. i read this post last night, and then when i woke up this morning i was watching my little boy, Momo. and he started doing weird stretching, then well.... he started doing what you were describing. i've had him for about a month or so now so this is the first time i've ever seen him do this.

this was me -----> :hilarious:
