I was wondering if it is possible to train dogs to use kitty litter instead of the pee pads? All four of my dogs use pee pads and was wondering if trying to train them to use kitty litter would be ok and safe?

I know a lot of apartment dogs are trained to use litter boxes. Purina also manufactures a litter for dogs that is really similar to Yesterday's News, which is non toxic and paper based.

There is some helpful information on their website: http://www.doglitter.com/GetPage.aspx?D=15721106&T=4847551

Since your guys already know to use pee pads, it may make it easier. Both of my dogs go outside, so trying to teach them to go inside was quite hard.

Good luck!

My dog can hold his urine for up to 12 hours or so if he has to - which is almost nill. But it is nice to know how well he can hold it if something comes up. I didn't know apartment dogs were trained to go indoors, and I suppose if you have to continue in this fashion, I would also use the pee pads rather than kitty litter. I don't think a dog is disciplined enough to stay out of the litter with his nose and possibly nibbling on it - very disgusting to think about. He might also see the litter as something to dig into.

My two are puppy pad trained and grass/outdoors trained. It works GREAT. I tried the kitty litter thing (it was actually doggy litter), and no...it did NOT work for either of my two. They played in it, kicked it, nibbled, everything BUT do their business in it. lol The puppy pads took zero-no training to get them to go on them, and they go on them religiously. Even when we travel, I can put one down and they know to go on it. Or, if I visit someone who has puppy pads for their dogs, my two will go on those. haha Works GREAT when you don't have a yard.

ETA: Oh yeah, and for the BEST prices on puppypads you will ever find, I go to www.petedge.com I get 200 pads for ~$33-34. I also get Frontline Plus or Advantage...flea/tick meds. for a great price there too. With that site though, if you don't spend at least $60 there is a $7 surcharge for "small shippments". But once you get on that site, you'll see that its easy to rack up $60 lol
