US Navy test on Chins?

I was curious today and browsing a website (Not CL or anything of that sort) to see if any rescues were taking in chins because there's really not that many chins in this area, and stumbled across 5 this far. Anyways, long story short, I saw 2 and according to the ad, they were rescued from a US Navy research facility, they both have implants in their ears and were used for studying hearing restoration for soldiers in Iraq who suffer hearing loss from explosions or something of that nature. I've never heard of this and I was wondering if anyone else had?

Yup, chins are used for hearing testing for humans. Quite a few of the ones sold for research by ranchers are used for this.

That's really interesting. I wonder if anyone would have the link (or if it's somewhat classified) for their research and studies? I'd be interested to see how they go about doing it.

A few years ago, I actually wrote a research paper on some of the studies being done on chinchillas for the purpose of hearing research. There is actually a lot of information and scientific papers about the subject out there, just google it. As for that particular navy study and subject, I didn't find any information on it at the time, but there may be new info now. While I'm not sure if this is where the actual study took place, but I know that when I was living in VA, there was someone who took in experimental chinchillas from a navy base after they were finished conducting research on them. I'm not sure what condition they were in, or what experimentation was performed on them.

i was apart of the group that took 50 chins from the research base. i had a few of them here for a while. they were normal acting but the only thing we noticed that if something loud happen they would freak out. one of them dead unexpectly after a year here and the others was giving to a friend in the quieter parts of the city.
