So when I built Chloe her cage some months back (don't remember when exactly) I used melamine to make the base and the back wall. It works wonderfully, especially because I had the foresight to make the base 8" tall. I used some poplar over every edge she could get to, thinking it would be easy to replace when it got too much pee on it.
Now, I don't really want to have to replace them. I put a pyrex dish in there and she goes in it sometimes but I cleaned her cage out last night and some spots on the wood that cover the bottom edges are getting stained and such. I can only smell it when I put my nose up to it, but I want to get the wood out of there because I know it will just get worse.
I looked into buying aluminum and making my own urine guards when I was building the cage but I was too overwhelmed with learning how to build the cage to look further into it and just stuck with wood temporarily.
Is it relatively easy to make your own urine guards? I would worry that she would chew and break the aluminum. Can you buy stronger bent metal and have someone cut it? Or is there somewhere I can buy urine guards relatively cheaply that you would recommend? I assumed buying them custom would be quite expensive since they would need to be about 25.5" (2) and 41" (2).
