Types of wood for shelves

Hey there so I have this wonderful large super pet cage that I got sometime ago and my chinchilla loves it. However since the platforms are made of plastic I worry about what gnawing on it may do to my chins digestive system. That being said I was wondering what kind of wood would be safe to make shelves out of!

Most people make shelves out of kiln dried pine. It's cheap, it's easy to clean (just spray with white vinegar and warm water and wipe or sand it down), and if they chew on the wood it is just a little bit extra with helping to keep their teeth healthy.

You can also use poplar (I can't find KD pine that is not 'select' in my area, which makes it more expensive than poplar).
