So I went camping for two nights and I came home to find two more large litters to add to my herd. One litters of quads apparently was born yesterday. Four good sized ebony females out of my champion eb male. Weights ranged from 54 gms to 59 gms. The other was a litter of triplets, pure standards. Two are good size but the 3rd looked like it was a preemie and mom was in the process of disposing of it when I returned home.

So my question is, the largest ebony female is alert and eating but she is struggling with the use of her hind legs. She seems to be dragging herself and not using the hind legs. I am assuming a birth injury occurred (breech possibly).

Have any of you experienced this and if so what was the outcome for the kit?

We had a standard male born about a month ago from a litter of trips that I was about sure wouldn't make it because he seemed like he was dragging his back legs behind him. I thought the same thing, birthing accident (and he's the only one that lived past the first few hours). Within a week he seemed to be completely normal, not saying its the same thing, but I hope it works out the same way for you :)

I have no idea about the possible birth injury...but I just wanted to say CONGRATULATIONS!!!! on EVEN MORE babies that I am sure are just as cute as ever!!!

Thanks Nicole! This is day 3 for her and she is still hanging in there. Dragging herself to follow mom and nurse but seems like she is burning extra calories to do that so I am supplementing her for now to give her a fighting chance and to see if she improves. I am really surprised at this set of quads - for one, I didn't think mom was this far along to deliver them over the weekend as she normally gains a ton of weight and wasn't even showing with this litter. All four of them are ebony females (yay)! All 4 have great weights. And so far there has been absolutely no squabbles to nurse. What an awesome mom Gertie is!!!

Here are pics of the ebony quads, introducing Dorothy, Rose, Blanche and Sophia. Hmmm...where did those names come from...let's see if you know and show your age!

I'm a youngin' and know where those names came from! But I had a "cultured" upbringing! Grew up on Barbara Streisand, Danny Kaye, Bing Crosby, Jerry Lewis, all the good ones!

That being said, I believe we had a beige female born like that. She seemed to recover, then mom found her wet and dead. No idea what happened. Hope yours pulls through!

Thanks Alicyn! Not sure what I hope - best case scenario is that she recovers from whatever trauma (birth injury) that she suffered and is completely normal. I know that handicapped chins do well as I have had a couple of tripods born here and do have my perpetually Stuart here as well, but not sure what kind of a life she will have if she pulls through but has to drag herself around her whole life. Torn on supplementing her if she will have a tough road but feel like I need to give her every fighting chance for now.

I love the names! And very pretty babies- I hope the one recovers from the birth injury for you. I've never had this happen so I can't comment on it :) but the babies are stunning!

Love the names! I am not afraid to admit it, that has always been on of my favorite shows. I just love those spunky ladies.

May your girls be as spunky as their namesakes! Congratulations on the large litters. I'm glad to hear that, overall, everyone is doing well. I hope your baby ebony girl recovers full use of her hind legs.

This set of ebony girls continue to do well. I have all 4 with mom and she seems to have enough milk to go around. Surprisingly there was never any fighting with this set - what an amazing mother Gertie is!

The injured girl continues to have issues dragging her rear right leg but has started to use the left one. She can climb the cage and sit in the feeder but that leg just kind of hangs there. I am worried that she will get it caught as she drags it or fall on it the wrong way and break something as she gets older and more adventurous.

Has anyone had a similar instance and what did you do about it? I wonder if once she is older if it would make more sense to have the leg amputated if she does not regain the use of it? I just worry about her safety and comfort level as she seems to use a lot of energy having it get caught up behind or underneath her when she is trying to move around.

She will be a week old tomorrow so certainly to young to do anything about it now but wondering about the future if she continues to do well.

I have never personally experienced it in chins...but in dogs, the womb can become so over crowded that things either don't form right or muscles don't get to develop right. Not saying that's the case, just suggesting another option.

I too am a GG's fan ;) from the younger generation, pretty sure when I was old enough to get the humor only reruns were playing but I did so enjoy watchin them with my grandmother ;)

I've never seen that happen to kits. I've seen temporary paralysis on a mom who had a kit stuck for hours (I was in school when it happened).

Have you tried pinching her toes hard to see if she pulls them back. My worry is if she has little to no feeling in her back end she could become incontinent and cause urine scalding when she is older. Right now you won't notice it because mom is keeping her clean. Something to watch for though. That could cause her to have poor quality life if she constantly has UTIs or ulcers from urine scald.

That's a good point. I hadn't thought of it, as I have not experienced such a situation with a kit but it's something I'm filing away for future reference (and hopefully will never need). Thank you for suggesting it!

Congrats on the newest litters. Keep us updated with the kit. I too am going to add Jessica's information to my chin information book.

Sorry I can't help you out with this one Juanita. The BV male kit born here a while back with the twisted head did manage to thrive and grow out to be healthy. He was a challange to say the least. Best of luck with the little one.
