Hi everyone. I'm going to be getting two chinchillas for the very first time within the next month or two, and my biggest question is for those with experience- do you suggest getting two males, or two females?

I'm getting them through a breeder and they should only be 2-3 months by the time I pick them out, so I figured they have a great chance of getting along well with one another that way. I've read a lot about males becoming aggressive with one another, so is it more recommended that I try to get two females instead? Some say even if two males are brothers, they will often begin fighting as they get older. My cage can be divided into two sections but a big reason for getting two is so they have a companion when I'm not around. I guess I just wanted some insight from your personal experiences.

Thanks for your help!

Males or females make no difference. Generally, males tend to be more mellow than females, but when it comes to hormones or being territorial, all bets are off. Rather than worry about which sex, go and check them out and see which ones speak to you. Base your decision on that rather than any preconceived notions about which is "better."

ANY chin at ANY time can turn on it's cage mate whether it's male/male, male/female, or female/female. That's why we always suggest to folks that they be prepared (which it sounds like you are) with a second cage or the ability to separate them. Find the ones you fall in love with and bring them home. ;)

Thank you both! I agree that it'll be much better to meet the chin kits before I decide to adopt anybody. I want to fall in love with whoever I do end up taking home, whether they are two boys or girls.

Something else I forgot to ask was about when I should actually introduce them. If I take two who aren't litter-mates, would it be safe to bring them home in the same carrier and put them both together in their new cage at the same time? As I said, they are young and in a new place, so neither should be territorial. Or should I bring two carriers and keep them in separate parts of the cage until they are accustomed to one another?
