Where did you get your tubes?? Can I make one out of PCV pipping???

The PVC tubes that some use for fleece tunnels/tubes that you attach to the cage can be purchased at home improvement stores. I'm sure others can tell you where else you can get them.

You can find a pvc tube at Lowe's, but I think you have to purchase the whole piece, which is quite long and very heavy.
I personally do not put any plastic in my chins' cages, especially pvc, because it "contains dangerous chemical additives. These harmful chemicals include phthalates, lead, cadmium, and/or organotins"
I make tubes that have a light, safe and durable steel base.
Let me know if you're interested.

You can use 6" PVC, or you can purchase 6" cardboard tubes at Petsmart or Petco. :)

I agree, if you're wanting to just make one or two, you can buy the 6" chubes at the pet store.

Otherwise at the hardware store you need to buy the whole 10 ft pipe or however long it is.

I can always sell some pvc pipes if you want, but they are heavier so you'd have to pay a bit for shipping. Cardboard would be cheapest.

The hardware stores out here, as well as our lumber mills, will cut it to size for you. I would check with them and see what they say in your area. I don't have to buy the entire tube.

Even if you do have to buy the whole length, wouldn't it be cheaper to just buy the tube and set it aside than to pay shipping for each one individually?

So it looks like we are going to build chompy a new cage. I just took out her ramps because she started chewing on them. She is having a hissy fit abut it and started to chew her plastic ledges. So she needs a new home that is bigger and all wood. So it looks like I'm going to be asking a lot more then just simple tubing. If cardboard is better for her then I will just get some from the pet store. Also, do I need to secure the tube??

Home depot has them too, not sure if they cut to exact measurements, but PVC pipe is cheap.

To secure it, I know we drilled two holes in the side and put a bolt through them then cut holes in the fleece where the bolts were and added a washer and a (I cant think of the word! Sorry, brain fart) thing to close off the screw.
And to make the fleece cover is really easy too! Measure the pipe when you get it wide and around. Add an inch or two to the around number then double and add a few inches of the diameter (width). Fold hotdog style and sew along the top. Put it on the tube then fold it inside the tube, then fold over the side. If you need/want more information PM me. I can prolly send you pictures.

A wing nut?

So, is the pvc's a yes or no? and if no what about those cardboard rolls they use for carpets?

I've used PVC for years and have never had a problem with it. Using the cardboard, to me, would be a huge waste of time. Cardboard is going to get soaked with urine and if they decide to chew it, it will be gone in a second. I've seen some teeth marks on the PVC pipe, but it's never been chunks missing or any amount worn down.

oh yeah wet cardboard whoops wow really need to stop staying up all night researching chins. sadly no matter how prepared I think I am I know they will suprise me with something new. That's what I have all of you for right? :)

I have the PVC in a few of my cages also, wrapped in fleece so they really cant get to it. my chins LOVE their tubes.
My fiance found these huge thick cardboard tubes at the jobsite he is working on....they were in the garbage so he brought them home. i was going to try and cut them and drill holes in them, wrap in fleece and try them out.
i hadnt thought about the urine tho......i guess it would be easy enough to toss them or hopefully they wont pee where they sleep?

Thanks for the help guys. I have a tube that I bought from the pet store. She could care less about it. It is similar to something at a dog agility course. I've seen pictures with all of your kids in their tubes and I thought she would like that more. I wanted to stay away from cardboard since I think she will try to eat it. If PVC is ok then I'm more comfortable going that route.

Is the one you got from the pet store, one of those accordion looking tubes? Mine did not like it either, but my cats loved it! She loves the cardboard tube though I have in her cage until I get the PVC one I ordered.

That is what she has. She really could care less about it. I will be making her a new one.
