I am getting my very first chin from a breeder in about two weeks and he will have just left his mommy about a week prior to that. I've been working on his cage for quite some time now and decided to go with all kiln dried pine ledges and a few sleep n ledges. What are your thoughts on this cage?

That is a really nice sturdy cage and you should be happy with it for a good long time!

If the chin is that young, you are going to need another hammock stretched out somewhere in the middle for safety. Babies are fearless and crazy.

Remove the Snak Shack log and toss it, they are loaded with sugars and other icky stuff that could make him sick.

The little hooded crock in there will make a great hay holder. You are going to need secure it to the cage with some wire so that it doesn't tip over on him. You can also drill a hole in the back and put in a screw, washer and wing nut. Use some tape on the ceramic before you try to drill, that will help stop it from cracking.

From experience, I think chins like hammocks better when they are stretched a little tighter, it gives them a more stable surface to stand on.

You did a fabulous job with shelf placement!! I think he is going to be very happy in there. And congrats on getting your new baby!

looks good! as Kara mentioned, the snak shack has to go - not safe for chins.

you'll need a glass water bottle. chins shouldn't have open water in their cage anywhere. i'm assuming you were going to use the bird water crock for your chin's water? the suggestion of using it for hay instead is a great one!

i see you have a plastic flying saucer wheel by the cage. you might as well return it to the store. those plastic wheels are a) flimsy and b) made of plastic, which is dangerous if a chin were to chew it and eat it. much better to save up for a real metal flying saucer, a chin spin, or a silver surfer wheel. in the long run you'll save money, because all plastic wheels are cheap junk and all the traditional shaped ones are not big enough.

if the bar spacing on that cage is 1 inch or more, you'll have to put up some wire mesh to keep baby from slipping between the cage bars. the wire mesh can be found at home depot and it's called 'hardware cloth'. it has half inch spacing, making it impossible for baby chins to escape.

can't wait to see photos of your new lil baby!

I've had a cage from that same line, the bar spacing will be fine. You will have to wire the little bird feeder doors shut, though, or you will have escapes, lol.

ETA: Oh, wait, I can see the little wire in the pics, you've got that covered already!
