Hi all,
I've had my little girl Onyx for about a year and a half now and love her to pieces. So recently I've been thinking about getting a cage mate for her to to make her happier and have someone to be around during the day since I'm a student and don't get to see her until I take her out at night usually. I just want as much information as I can get so I can make an informed decision. First, I know I have to get a bigger cage period. Because I hate the one I bought her, but are there any ones that you guys recommend for housing two chins at a reasonable price?
Also, I really want to be able to cage them together. Obviously I would never force two chinchillas to live together because that could get dangerous and I would never compromise their safety. But what are all the steps I can take to introduce Onyx to a possible cage mate, is it too far to take her with me in a carrier when I look for another chin and see what she does when separated by the carrier door? What can I do to make this a positive experience for everyone??

If you do decide to get a second chin, you will need to have a 30 day quarantine. Do not take Onyx with you to meet a possible cage mate. Keep in mind, your chin may not want a cage mate. I have one solo chin, like me, she does not play well with others. :D I had her alone for almost two years before I brought home any new chins. After my 30 day quarantine, I had the girls living in the same room. They can see into each other’s cages, but cannot touch. Months after I had them in the same room, I tried to have a joint playtime in a neutral space. Shelly (my solo chin) lunged at my other two. She had never bitten me, until that day. My hand was the casualty in trying to keep my girls apart. This is just my experience. Others have had luck with introductions.

Use the search bar above to research introductions. There are many threads about this topic.
