I usually buy Zoo supplies at a local rescue ..or my local feed store. It's "safer" if I hit up the feed store.. they don't normally have animals there... but I have will power, so I do as much business as I can with the rescue.. as it benefits them in more ways, of course.
Sooo.. I'm running my errands and making rounds.. find out my Mazuri order is in for the bRats ..and head over to pick that up. As soon as I get inside, the director starts telling me about the new "kids" ..LOTS of bunnies! Baby bunnies, preggo bunnies.. terribly mistreated bunnies.. and so on. Well.. I'm not really a bunny person, per se ..so I look in their direction and say "hello" to them all... and go on about my business.
I loaded the car up.. came back and checked out the bRats in the back of the rescue.. wheeked at the pigs.. scritched some bunny chins.. and went to look at the treats and toys for my current Zoo Crew. And then I noticed.. felt.. I was being watched from one of the newcomer cages. I could just feel this piercing observation.. and sense of fear, apprehension.. all the same. So I looked a little closer.. and it wouldn't make eye contact.. stared blankly as if to say, "You can't see me cuz I'm not looking at you."
I asked permission.. reached in and picked up this "crunchy" pot-bellied wire'y coated little body.. snuggled it in close.. and suddenly realized that the frail, every bone protruding, brittle coat, stiff-crunchy ears... little being.. was also very much PREGNANT! And I started to cry. Dang it!
Soooo.. Bella packed her bags, hopped in the bunny ride.. meds, new treats and toys.. everything she owned..... and she'll be recovering and rehab'ing here. The plan is to foster her until she delivers her bundle.. then have her spayed and some permanent repair done on her teeth (all at once, to reduce risk and trauma). I will probably keep her.. I can't imagine that I'll be able to part with her after all this.. and her babies will be adopted through the rabbit rescue.
I took one pic after I gave morning meds. She was stretched out in my lap, enjoying the full body massage. Her response to touch is sort of like someone in the desert finding water. She can't seem to get enough.. but she's very weary, as well.
I only took this one pic.. to avoid stressing her out. She has a beautiful rexy coat, but it has a ways to go back to pure luxurious curly'ness. She had parasites (mites, ticks.. yes, ticks!) ..and she's being treated for RI and pain as result of her neglect.
Keep sweet Bella in your prayers and thoughts, please..
