A few weeks ago, I posted a thread here asking for opinions on moving the chinchillas from my bedroom on the top floor of the house to the basement. Reading your replies made me a lot less anxious about the idea, but I still wanted to wait a while before going through all the effort involved with disassembling the cage, moving it down two flights of stairs, and reassembling it in the basement. My mom and I finally got the job done, and the boys have a new home where I'm spending most of my free time.
However, I have a few concerns :hmm:
Being below the main floor of the house may not be the best thing for Rocco. He's always been in my bedroom and has never had to deal with loud footsteps right above his head. Since the move, he's been more skittish and less willing to be held. If I take him out of the cage, I can only hold him for a few seconds before he starts struggling. If I hold him close enough to the cage, he jumps right back in and hides on one of the shelves. He's also barking a lot more. I don't think they like the noise made by the TV either. I keep it on the lowest volume that I can still hear, but apparently it's too loud for them.
Furby hasn't had as much trouble with the move because he was quarantined in the basement for his first month with us.

I know this was a long post, but what do you all think? Should they be moved back or do you think they just need time to acclimate?

I always play music and leave lights on. My chins have moved to a finished basement and these two things make them feel comfortable.

It takes a while for some chins to adjust. I'm sure he will eventually adjust. Just take it slow with him for awhile to give him time to adjust to his new surroundings. Talk to him a lot and leave him be in his cage just like when you first got him.

My chin is in the basement with me, which is also my room, but when we first got her, the foot steps upstairs would freak her out so badly. I actually considered moving her upstairs somewhere, but within a few days she was fine with it.

I think your chin will adjust to it if you give him time, all the new sights, sounds, smells, must be scary at first!

Thanks, everybody! You've made me feel a lot better. I'll try the lights and music.
