Do any of you guys use temperature monitoring? I would like to get a system that will send a message to my cellphone alerting me the temperature is too high. I've been doing some research on the forums and I haven't found specific brands.

I will probably be going on a few overnight trips and possibly a little vacation this summer and I'd like to help relieve my worries. Even when I'm at work, I can rush home if needed to take of a problem.

Believe me, if I could set up some cameras and watch my chins on my phone/laptop I would do it! LOL!

Let me know what devices you use or recommend..

I would love something like this. When I go out of town for the weekend I have a trusted friend check on my chins, but I always worry... what if they AC goes out in the middle of the night or something? If this existed, I could just set it up to alert her to go over there.

I have done a lot of temperature monitoring but never for the chins. Mostly because mine are in a steel building.

There are two types of consumer-grade sensors you can get, one is a USB sensor that attaches directly to the PC, and the other is a wireless sensor that has to be within 60ft of a wireless router. Both still require a PC that is on and has the ability to send e-mail to work.

A third type is what we used for the Forest Service and sends via satellite. These are rather expensive, but they also work. Nowadays they're a bit cheaper in the form of Garmins- I believe they have a model that monitors temp and uploads it via GPS. You'd have to do a bit of programming to tie it into Google Maps, but it's an option.

Edited to say that the freezealert thing looks interesting, never seen nor used one. Does it tie into a computer or your phone?

It uses the phone line.It has battery back up and the temp sensor is on a long piece of cable.Best things I like are 1)no monthly monitoring fees 2)I can cancel the temp alert and power outage alerts via my phone 3)I can set the unit to call three phone numbers during alarm activation.;)

I have the cellular model from Temperature@lert. It checks the temperature every 15 minutes and sends signals out via cellular towers. If the temperature gets out of the range I set as okay, I get a text message with the reading and my husband gets an email. We get messages at every check until it's back in the safe range. It also has a battery backup in case of a power outage. I've had it for about a year and a half now and it works great.

I have the same question. Dawn, how easy is the set up for the specialty alarm? And what do you mean that you think it stands alone?

I don't have a PC, a phone line, or a wireless router...we still have to get internet at home and I just use my cellphone internet for now.

Another brand you can look at is sensaphone. I have one, but the model I have is no longer produced (had it for a while). I use mine with the hedgehogs. It alerts for temp too low, temp too high, noise level too high (fire alarm), and power outage. It will call my cell phone and my husband's for a user settable number of tries before giving up. I like it.
