Question in regards to teeth issues. (Apologies for the lengthy background but I think it's needed...)

My 3-year old boy, Splinter has been on and off "ill" since about March. His eyes were watery with a white goo that was coming out. The vet had me do anti-biotic eye drops for 10 days and it seemed to clear up... with it occurring every once in a while but not consistent. In August, he started pawing at his mouth a little and eating less. I assumed the worst... teeth problems. He's now gone under twice and they have found no major issues. The 2nd time under, the vet filed down two points but said it wasn't anything that necessarily needed to be filed, they just did it in case it was causing him any issues. He did NOT do well under anesthesia so they said they wouldn't do it again for about a year unless he absolutely had to.

Between the two times he was put under, he had a seizure which cause him to lose some motor skills it seems (not as smooth or fluid of movements as he had before). He has never been the same after that. He bounced back pretty quick (the vet said it was probably from heat and/or he stressed himself out somehow). Since then, he's been on Critical Care food (starting to eat more and more hay and chewing on his toys, etc is back to normal...) Everything seems fairly normal actually except 1) he's more social... I think we bonded a lot with the seizure incident as I stayed by his side for days plus spoon-feeding CC and 2) he sleeps in strange places now... used to sleep on his ledge or in his bed... but not he tends to spend half of day sleeping in his litter pan (making sure to pee on one side and sleep on the other, haha).

The only thing I'm realizing now is that we never got x-rays to ensure that the tooth problem wasn't at the roots (as I didn't know until now that that could be an issue that goes unseen)...

I looked at the list of Signs of Pain in chins... and have noticed a few minor things he does (but it's hard to tell if it's pain or just because he's eating)... 1) he opens his mouth wide if he gets a "chunk" is in Critical Care food... 2) he grinds his teeth after he eats... 3) he paws at his mouth... but only when he's eating and seems to get too much or a chunk...

So... with that said... My question is... I wasn't worried about him because signs are pointing to him feeling better... But... Should I be worried about a root problem??? And if so, what do I do if he can't be put under? Is there another way to get x-rays?

The vet actually mentioned that but then she checked him out (at a couple different appointments) and said she's not hearing anything abnormal.

Some vets use the ketamine as a pre-anesthesia to the isoflurane and it does gnarly things to chinchillas as far as side effects goes, I about stroked out when it was used on one of mine during a routine filing. Chins can throw clots and have strokes during anesthesia, O2 levels could have been too high or to low, apnea can happen and if the vet or tech is not paying attention bad things happen, physiological things can show up while under such as cardio or pulmonary problems or the chin could be just sensitive to the gas, but I agree going under in this case is a last resort.

That said, if you feed him something he really likes does he eat it without issues? If the answer is yes then he can eat on his own and chooses not to for whatever reason.

One note: handfeeding for a long period of time in itself causes dental issues, chin teeth can grow-1-3mm or more a week unchecked so handfeeding is not a good long term option on a chin without a diagnosis, if the chin eats the treat then the chin needs to be weaned off the CC, start by cutting out the last meal a day, weigh the chin in the morning, wait a day or so and repeat this until the chin is either weaned or is losing weight, if the weight loss is more that 20 or so grams then resume feeding and really get on the vet for a diagnosis.

Gotcha. I don't think it was associated with putting him under.

He does eat treats (dandelion drops and/or shredded wheat) without any issues. So I'm guessing that means it's not hurting him in terms of having a tooth problem or being in pain.

Him being in pain is my biggest fear... but I'm just not seeing any major signs of pain.

Currently, I hand-feed him (by spoon) twice a day... around 8:30am and around 10pm. That's the schedule he's been on. Lately he may munch of hay in between (not really touching the pellets) but he's on a schedule. He actually waits at the front of his cage at that time because he expects.

So from there... what do you think is the best way to start weening? I'm not feeding him 5 times a day so cutting out 1 time will mean he eats only once a day.

I started keeping track of his weight. It's tough when he doesn't want to sit in the bowl. I know it's normal to fluctuate but how much? Within 24 hour he was down 8g. Is that normal? Or it could be because he moves a lot while checking his weight.

You can request it from the vet they usually will put it on a CD.

Do you mean to request the x-rays on a CD?

The problem is they didn't get any while he was under because they had to get him out of it with his heart rate dropping. So I have no x-rays and don't know any other way to get them if I need them.

Looking at what Dawn is saying I'm wondering if he's just being stubborn with his regular food and not really having any major issues. He loves the Critical Care food and mom's attention. :)

Instead of the 10pm feeding, give it to him a 6 pm, he will still have food to survive if he is not eating or cannot but will get hungry between the 6pm and 8:30 making him eat if he can.

Okay. Great. I'll try that. I did try waiting longer than usual one morning as well. I waited until about 11am instead of 8:30am and sat and watched him eat hay at about 9am because he had no other option. So I know it can be done.

Maybe I'm too much of a sucker when he puts his paws on the cage and gives me those sweet, begging eyes.

I just fear for him to lose any more weight... or be hungry.

As for any treats... is it OK to still give him a treat here and there?

I would not give him any treats until he is back at 100%. He needs all of his calories to be nutritious. I would also get rid of the dandelion drops; they are not good for him.

Ok! I've always been told Dandelion is healthy for chins... And it's both of my boys' favorite thing!!! Is there an alternative that's healthier?

Dandelion the dried plant is ok, the drops the first ingrediant is sugar. A non sugar shredded wheat or cherrio is a ok treat.

I've seen the dried Dandelion leaf and the root... is one better than the other? Or just different tastes?

They love the non-sugar shredded wheats and an occasional cheerio, too!
