OK so it's been 2 weeks that my chin, Popcorn, has been on Metacam and 2 antibiotics for abscessed teeth. Vet says 5 mollars just fell out on examination and she'll be on liquid food for life now. My questions are: First, how long should she be on the once a day Metacam? 2nd, Will she ever try to eat the CC on her own? She's getting better about not fighting her feedings, and grabs for the syringe, but won't attempt to eat on her own. She's pretty active and hasn't dropped any weight so far. Thanks for the info. rapgar

She could be on pain meds and anitbiotics forever when dealing with abscessed rotten teeth. When using metecam forever, you need to give it with food and use pepcid with it to help prevent gastric ulcers. My experience with rotten teeth/abscesses is you are the chins main source of food, they will not eat anything on their own, the pain in the teeth prevents them from doing it and I have tried just about every pain med out there, used together, used separate and all did not cut the pain enough for the chin to be "normal"., they cause side effects that can be worse than the pain. The best result I got with minimal side effects was tramadol and metecam together used at max dose, along with the pepcid. Chin were still in pain, but it gave the chin a better quality of life than without waiting out to see if the antibiotics would work. Chins in this situation more often than not I am sad to say don't recover and are ultimately killed by pneumonia from the infection. I had 1 recover, 4 did not, all were on injectable baytril and oral trimethsulfate for a min of 21 days, then on the trimeth until death.
