My 2.5 yr old chinchilla tends to be active and night between 10p and 1 am and can occasionally be seen stretched on his hing legs messing with the roof of his cage but his behavior tonight has been ridiculous.
He seemed super anxious so we took him out for a while and let him run around and when I put him back he went right back to it... he does this thing where he just runs back and forth in the same 9 inch long shelf. He runs to one side and stands on hind legs toward the ceiling, pivots to fall back on 4 legs on the other side, runs to the other end of the cage and repeats. He's doing it so incessantly that it is making me worried- I've never seen him do this before.
I'd like to mention that he does have a chin spin, ledges to leap on, a wooden house to go in and chew, his favorite wood chew block... plenty to stay stimulated. Why is he acting so repetitive and neurotic?
