Don't know if any of you have heard of this but a town called Holley in New York has a fundraising event sponsored by the fire department where adults and children pay to shoot squirrels. There are prizes for the biggest, etc.

If you disagree with this there is a petition Here

And for those on facebook groups Here and here for more information.

Stupid! This reminds me of something I saw on one of those "craziest videos" shows on TruTV. This town drops a live turkey out of a plane (and not close to the ground either- way up in the air) and a bunch of people are down below and whoever catches the turkey gets to keep it. It was pretty disgusting, this turkey fell and was flapping everywhere! This kid grabs it and yells, "Mine!" and runs off with it. WHY?! Poor turkey. Is it not bad enough the poor thing will be cooked?!!

I have a problem with people hunting just for sport. Are they going to eat these squirrels? I bet not. I find myself getting queasy when people hunt and really enjoy killing an animal. They showed a little girl hunting her first deer with her dad on TV and she was so proud, laughing and giggling. I know it's a bonding experience, but I think we should give the animals that feed us more respect than that. It's just not right imo.

Thank you all. You guys are awesome. If you check out This Facebook link it is a permanent page that will continue fighting contest kills that take place across the country. We are aiming for 1200 likes by next week, that same amount as people in that town. There are lots of phone numbers to call and places to write letters listed there.

I don't personally agree with hunting but I understand why some people do. But what kills me about this, besides my personal beliefs, is that it is turned into a game for kids. Sponsored by firemen. People who are supposed to be heros teaching kids that killing living things is a game that should be rewarded.

Jezus. The more people I hear about, the more I love my animals. This is the same barbaric idea behind rattlesnake roundups, where children are encouraged to finger paint in snake blood, snakes are skinned alive, have their mouths sewn shut for "safe" demonstrations...

The whole darn world makes me sick some days...

I did look up to see that it is squirrel hunting season until Feb 28th. And much of the state has a daily limit of 6. So it's pretty much for hunters. And legal with the state laws and license. Pretty hard to kill 6 in a day. No doubt thats why they offer a two man team.

I did see there are prizes and raffles. And a 50/50. Rules for only shooting the gray and red. Black and Fox squirrel is illegal for New York state.

If it were in my area I would do it. But I eat what I kill. Sorry guys. There's always going to be hunters and non hunters. Hope you can understand where I'm coming from. I'll eat any kind of game except racoon. :barf:

I did sign, because I think it's a stupid thing to teach children, but comparing it to Sandy Hook? <shakes head>

I do understand. It is the contest kill aspect that bothers me.

Yeah. There is a lot of hyperbole in that one.
