"Hey folks, my small male was not himself at all last night. He got up pretty late, 8.30 and usually gets up around 7pm. He has slept late before but the whole eveing he kept going back into his nest box and seemed very sleepy. He was moving around, although not very energetically his movement wasn't sluggish either, and he was eating both his pellets and hay although he wasn't interested in his shredded wheat given when we took his bath out which he did use. He has a couple of cuddley toys in with him, one which we put in his nest box at night and it's a certainty that he will have dragged it out come morning, yesterday when i got up it was still in there and he was sleeping on it, very odd.

Checked on him today and he came to my hand and had a tickle but still seems the same and still no interest in his shreeded wheat. Seems to be sleeping deeply as his eyes are firmly closed, sometimes they look open a tiny bit.

I did spot a couple of small poos on his shelf, I can't tell though if they are bit he's broken up by nibbling on them.

There has been no change in his diet, Charnwood breeding and active pellets, timothy hay given daily, small amount of alfalfa stalks once a week, dried banana or apple once a week and shredded wheat a few times a week (was every night but we cut down a couple of weeks ago.)

The only time at night that he will have a nap is when he's had a good run around out of the cage (every other night) on the nights that he's in he's usually bounding around full of beans.

He is due out tonight, should i see how he is when he wakes up and decide from there whether to get him out? If he's still not right tonight then he'll be going to the vets but any help advice or ideas on what could be wrong would set my mind at ease in the mean time. He is a small fella, weighed him last Tuesday and he weighed 408g but has no problems otherwise. Not sure if it's relevant but when it's been pretty hot lately he has been kept cool."

Lethargy in a chin means a emergency vet visit, by the time they are lethargic illness has progressed to the point where the chin could die, its sounds dramatic I know but chins hide illness so well that they are often on deaths door when symptoms are noticed.

I'm taking him to the vets tomorrow.

He's a lot more lively now but energy wise is still not quite right. Weird thing is, he is eating his timothy hay and ignoring his pellets, I crushed some up worried it was a dental problem but he hasn't touched them.

He has not drunk from his water bottle once today, yet just drank from a syringe. I checked water is flowing in his bottle. I crushed some up worried it was a dental problem but he hasn't touched them. He is still chewing on his wood and his lava/pumice ledge.

Is he "off" or is he lethargic? Being off could be the start of gas build up, they will go off feed and just seem not right, lethargic is hiding and sleeping alot with no energy. Gas still needs a vet visit so let us know what happens.

Yeah he's going no matter what.

There was more info than just the original post in the link. As much as he has perked up he is still sleepy on and off. He often has a doze at night on top of his nest box especially if he has been out for a run around, usually his eyes are slightly open and he'll spring up and be instantly alert. Since he has been off he is sleeping inside the box in the evening (never slept in there at night before) eyes shut tight and he's sleepy when he gets up. Just so weird how he won't eat his pellets. He is a small chin but always has been but he's so full of energy, he's like an excitable little puppy

Vet says that he has spurs so they're going to knock him out and file the tooth. Should have him back this afternoon, vet said he'll have some painkillers for a few days. I know there's a higher risk of an anaesthetic because of his size but this has to be sorted out.

I said to the vet that he always has loads of chew toys, different woods and pumice, nice stalky timothy hay, the vet said he was just unlucky.

I know the vet will give me aftercare instructions but any tips would be much appreciated. Is he likely to suffer a recurrence of the problem? Should i give a wider range of chew blocks that are hard like this http://www.pet-supermarket.co.uk/products-Quiko-Chinchilla-Chew-Blox-Individual-Pack_NC4427.htm

He ignored his natural pumice but loved the foot/fish shaped ones for bathroom use

A lot better thanks, eating and drinking as normal. Not quite as energetic as usual though and seems more wary if I go to tickle him. Tomorrow is the last day he has his painkiller which must be pretty stressful as he doesn't like being held and it means disturbing him during the afternoon. Hopefully he'll be back to his normal self by the weekend.

Once that painkiller wears off, he will probably be back to his old self. The painkiller is probably making him drowsy.
