One of my friends called me a few mins ago saying that their house was on fire and burnt down last night. They are trying to find a rental place currently, one that hopefully will allow animals, but until they do they need a place for their dog (a 6 month old shephard I believe). She wanted to know if I had any suggestions of a place that could take him until they get things straightened out, since I work with the dog rescue.

I gave her the number for the three area vet clinics that I know of who also do boarding, but that will get expensive for them. The dog is with a neighbor now, but the neighbor has said that the dog has to be out by next week. I told her I'd call if I thought of anything else.

She doesn't want to give the dog away or surrender him over to a shelter- she just needs to figure out a place for him to go until they get things straightened out. She's asked around to friends but hasn't had any luck there. I would take him, but we can't have 5 dogs here.

Any other ideas? I'm hoping they can get something worked out for a local vets office or kennel- the going rate aroud here is $25-$30 /day.

Can you put her in touch with local rescues and shelters? I know the rescue I belong to has a listserv for all of the volunteers. If a posting like this went up, I can guarantee there would be people willing to keep the dog until they found a new living situation.

Wow, how sad. Does she belong to a church? I know that most churches would be very helpful and most likely find someone willing to help, especially in this situation. Or maybe you can start a raffle or fund for them- to help pay for the boarding costs. I hope they figure something out, and am glad no one was hurt in the fire.

We're in Northern VA, about 15 minutes from the boarder of Maryland. I'm not sure if she belongs to a church but I will ask. That's a good idea.

I'm going to send an email off to the rescue I volunteer with- they are a large scale rescue and there are tons of volunteers (6 events total with 20-30 people at each event) so I'm hoping I can get some ideas that way too.

The volunteers are a good idea. They might try to find a foster family until they get back on their feet.

Also, not sure if this would work, if any of the boarders are extra-nice, they might see if they could do a "pro-bono" in exchange for maybe some publicity. That could benefit the family, the dog, and the vet clinic. Hope everything works out for them!

I received an email back from the rescue, saying that they would ask around... but honestly, I'm not holding my breath. I think they've got a better shot at working a deal out with a vet or kennel. I've been asking around to friends but haven't had much luck there.

I haven't heard any updates- she said she'd call me if they got something figured out, but I know they are busy and stressed right now so I don't want to bother them. Hopefully they can work something out.
