First-time poster here - I apologize if this gets posted twice; the first time I submitted it didn't appear to save.

My male chin, Rico, is having an issue with soft stool. We just have the one. We've had him for about 1.5 years, but not sure exactly how old he was when we got him.

On Friday night, we noticed that he had soft stool. It was the normal shape/size, but squishy and slightly we to the touch. (Not runny though). We had just given him a treat (a raisin) before we noticed, but immediately switched over to a timothy hay diet only after realizing. We haven't given him another treat or pellets since Friday evening.

Last night it appeared to be better - his stool was harder, but this morning I found some squishy stool again in his cage. He's been eating the hay and drinking water normally, so his appetite doesn't seem affected in general. He also does not exhibit any other signs of illness; still running around the cage, running and jumping around during play time outside the cage - plenty of energy and no other odd behavior.

I can't think of anything that's changed in his environment that would make this a stress-related issue. The only new treat or toy we've introduced was last weekend I picked up some timothy hay twists: http://www.petfooddirect.com/produc...SmPIpkcogDed6_37quexGMgNxCVgj91DvAaAlJ38P8HAQ

He's had one in his cage for about a week and been nibbling on it. Do you think this could be related? My next step is to call the vet, because I expected that his stool would return to normal by now when switching to the hay diet. No diarrhea as of yet, but want to try and make sure it doesn't get to that point. Any insight is much appreciated! :)

That treat shouldn't be a problem. It's just twisted timothy hay. What kind of water are you using? Do you use filtered or reverse osmosis? Chins can get giardia from tap water. Does the poo smell bad or have mucous on it?

It doesn't have any real odor, or any mucous that I can tell.

We give him Poland Spring water from the cooler we have. We initially used tap water, but read it could cause issues so discontinued use of that well over a year ago.

Is it possible his other wooden chews or ledges could be contaminated? I've never noticed him urinating on any of them or anything like that, but we have had some of the ledges for a long time.

It seems to have gotten a little firmer as of this morning, but still soft. Is there an amount of time that's too long for chins to just be on a hay-only diet? I didn't want to add pellets back in until things improved more, but don't wan to starve the little guy.
