What have I done wrong and what should I do? All of a sudden my chin has soft poo. What should I do to cure this? He hasn`t any change in food other than maybe too much timothy. :cry3:

What kind of food is he on, how soft is it, did you give him too many treats, what kind of treats?

Definately pull all the pellets and just give hay. Try some burnt, and yes very burnt toast, some people use non-frosted shredded wheat, that should also help bind him up.

If it's really super soft, personally I wuold go to a vet.. If it's just alittle soft you can try treating him yourself, also no more treats until this goes away. And he will be fine on just hay for a day.

best of luck to you

Well first of all you have to give a little more information. What kind of food is he on? I've had this happen in the past when my chins were on Mazuri. Every so often one or two of them would get soft poo. Do you give treats and what kind? Sugary fruits and fresh vegetables and fruits are not good for chins. If you're giving things of this nature, stop doing so and give healthy treats such as plain cheerios, plain shredded wheat, dried rose hips, a tiny pinch of old fashioned not quick cooking oats.

Whenever you run across soft poo--soft not runny, pull the pellets for several days and feed only hay. This will usually do the trick. If you sense the poo is more watery then a trip to the vet is a must.

soft poo

He is on the same food his breeder had him on which is especially blended. Also timothy. He does not get any dried fruit or fresh vegetables. I have given him unfrosted shredded wheat one a day. Also have given him tap water and also bottled. I will take out pellets. His poo is formed and alittle wet is all, he is feeling fine, just am concerned as usually we have normal dried poo. Also breeder gave me a large amount of loose timothy and am wondering could that be the problem. He is not on musuri pellets.

I would not use burned toast. It has been recommended for many years, but it also contains a carcinogen. Instead, get and keep on hand activated charcoal. It works super fast and can be stored pretty much forever.

You can also get kaolin pectin, but you have to be real careful not go to overboard with it.

Pick one water. Unless your tap water is filtred, that could be your problem right there. Also, "bottled water" could mean anything. Does it say spring? There is no regulation on spring water. Wal-Mart sells reverse osmosis and distilled water by the gallon. I prefer the reverse osmosis because the distilled removes everything from the water and basically just leaves wet behind.

Pull the pellets for 2 or 3 days. Give nothing but timothy hay. No treats, no supplements. You can give acidophilus in addition to the activated charcoal or kaolin pectin.

I am not a fan of Mazuri. Too many people have issues with diarrhea from it.

you can get activated charcoal tablets or capsules from any pharmacy or health food store....just look in the vitamin/supplement section.

If you get pressed tablets you can give them whole (my chins eat them as if they were treats!), but if you get capsules then you'll need to break open the capsule and sprinkle the contents over the chins pellets. Throw out the capsule itself though.

I give one a day, that's usually enough to sort out a minor soft poop issue.

If the poops get mushy though then a vet visit would be a good idea.

A lot of things can cause soft poo. It's not necessarily anything you did. My boys get it from time to time after cleaning their cage or moving it, they can be very sensitive.. I just load them up on acidophilus, activated charcoal and a couple of shreddies and the problem is sorted out. If it doesn't sort out though, you need to get him to the vet with a fresh stool sample, which he should give you on the ride there. Good Luck!

Thanks everyone for the advise!

Just thought I`d let everyone know all is back to normal with my chin tootie. Really didn`t have to do anything but cut out pellets for one day and only give oxbow western timothy, so glad no more soft poo that just is a nightmare to scrape off wheel etc!!! I was using loose timothy from the breeder but thought maybe this was the cause so tried oxbow, so far so good!

Thanks again!:)

oh! i actually just noticed that my chinny has the same problem, but i just noticed it about an hour ago when i cleaned his cage.

i gave him a peice of dried papaya, so i think that may be the cause because it is supposed to clean out his system. but i was wondering, should i take out his food and just give him timothy hay and take it day by day?
he wont get hungry just eating the hay?
