Lucky me, there is an old ornamental crab Apple tree that somehow started growing on the vacant lot next to our beach house on the Washington coast. I can only reach some of it as it is surrounded by blackberry bushes. I brought home a huge bag of branches, cleaned them, trimmed them and now my house is filled with the sweet smell of apple branches baking in the oven. HEAVENLY!

i personally would not give any of that wood to your chins. you don't have the full history of this tree, and don't know if fertilizers or pesticides have been used on or around it. vacant lots can be sprayed by the local municipality for weeds, and that tree would have absorbed the chemicals.
