When the mom delivers the afterbirth, is that the end of the births, are all babies delivered? The three litters that mine have had have always been in the middle of the night, so I didn't get to see them first-hand.

Saphira has given birth to just one little one, then the after birth, and now she seems like she's done, but I just want to make sure. Her and baby are resting comfortably.

the after birth does mean she is done.

congratulations.

I have yet to see a birth as well, but shouldn't each kit be followed by a placenta? (Unless they are true twins and share one?)

I have actually witnessed several live births. Technically, there should be a placenta after each kit. However, I have noticed in my multiples, that it does happen that all the placentas are ejected after all the kits have been born. And like Mish said, in the case of true twins (or trips, etc.) there would only be one placenta.

If you know how, you can gently palpate her stomach area to make sure she has no kits left. You shouldn't feel any more "masses" left, and she should be rather squishy.

Yes, I did get to see it be born. But I think she might have hurt "it". There is a little blood by it's nose/lip. Other than that, it seems to be fine. Here are a couple of pics.:

The little girl didn't make it through the night. I think she was premature - her eyes weren't open and her ears stayed folded back. She would have been a cutie, though :(

It is always a good idea to feel the belly after a birth. Sometimes the female will have other kits inside her, with no signs. If you feel a mass in the belly, you know you have a problem!

Very sorry about your loss, that of course is my least favorite part about breeding (losing babies).

Just because her eyes wouldn't stay open doesn't mean she was premature though. Sometimes babies just don't make it.

I am so sorry for your loss. Feel special that you at least got to witness the birth. I have always hoped, but no matter how hard I try, it always happens when I am not around. Again, I am very sorry.

Yeah, that was amazing to see... but I still cried when I found her. I've lost newborn kittens and dogs, but she was my first chin. . . :(

It's always tough losing a kit. I've been breeding for almost 13 years now and it's still tough.
Sorry to hear about your baby! :(
