We brought 2 male chinchilla's 2 or 3 days ago, one is very bouncy and lively, but the other is very shy and stays in the corner of the cage or in a tube, nor will he accept treats. The only time he comes out is when the room is dark and they both run around the cage together.

I am not worried, as it takes a while to gain their trust - but how do you go about taming a shy chinchilla? The only thing that seemed to work is when I played with the straw for about 15 minutes and he became curious.

4 outa 5 of my chins hide in the corner or in a tube on a regular basis. I wouldn't worry to much about that since you just got them. They need time to adjust to a new environment and new ppl.

I suggest holding your hand in there for awhile...Once Mr.Shy see's Lively having fun exploring your hands, he might become more curious. :) My chins were exactly the same way when I got them..One was adventurous and outgoing while the other was very shy and laid back...

Also, after awhile set up a barrier around their cage, open the cage and let them jump out at will. My shy guy eventually figured I'm more fun to climb on than hide from! :) He JUST recently began letting me pet him. It's so exciting!

Enjoy your new chins!

They both sit in my hand how, the lively one (peanut) will allow you to stroke him, he will run away and then come back a few seconds later, I assume it's just him getting used to it; he more timid one (pickle) is still getting used to our hands, it doesn't help when peanut tries to push him out the way every time!!!
