Hello, everyone. I have lurked this forum many times as a "guest" but finally have registered... I've been keeping chins for three years now and currently own five.
I recently adopted a chin from a young lady who was having to relocate to an apartment that didn't allow pets. She warned me that he was "special needs." She said he'd been given multiple courses of antibiotics and medicated drops to rid him of a serious ear infection. Due to the length and severity of the infection she said he had residual neurological damage and a head tilt. I wasn't aware of the severity of his condition until she left him with me and I got him out. He seems to have little control over his head movements- even when eating/drinking- and he runs in circles a lot. (He does, however, eat and drink a normal amount.)
I became very worried when I noticed him making little sniffle-y noises every once in a while and he'd wipe his nose after. It's not quite a sneeze, at least it doesn't sound like a normal chin sneeze. I asked his prior owner and she said he had done that for a long time. She had him on pine bedding so I switched him over to aspen in case it was too dusty for him... Just in case he could be contagious I immediately put his cage in a separate room, quarantined from my other chins.
The vet- who is really the only exotics vet in town- thought the ear infection was gone for good this time (it had been treated for months and kept coming back.) I'm not sure what to think... His prior owner is a vet tech (at a different clinic) and she said if I see signs of infection to text her and she can get me antibiotics for him.
Have any of you dealt with this? Do you think he could still have the ear infection and maybe also an upper respiratory infection? I don't know what to think...

I would have a vet look at him to rule out an upper respiratory or ear problem. The sniffly thing could be caused by his past medical problem but you want to be sure that's what is causing it.

I have a rescue with head tilt. She was put on 6 weeks of TMS which helped her tumbling motion stop. She wil never get rid of the head tilt but she has better control of herself now. My vet felt it was an untreated ear infection that caused it.

I have a rescue guy that has a head tilt due to ear infections when he was younger. He still has fairly good control over his movements, although they are never in a straight line. He's completely deaf, which I'm assuming is a result of the ear infections also. He's a bit more "special" than the other boys, but he's very well adjusted. He was also anorexic, malnourished, and has a hunchback to boot. Hopefully you and the vet can get the infection cleared out and he can get back some control of his movements. I'm hoping for the best for him.
