Okay so I'm at a bit of a crossroads. I want a Chinchilla and have sufficient time to take care of him or her, but I'm in college and when I go home for the summers, I stay in a house with no AC! I understand that chinchilla'so cannot be in extreme heat, so I'm wondering if I could have a friend watch him/her for the summers? I don't know if that long of a seperation would cause the chinchilla to become confused or nervous, or if he/she would be fine, as long as my friend gives him/her lots of attention! Please help me! I don't want to confuse the chinchilla by having it with me for 9 months out of the year and with a friend for 3 months, but a chinchilla sounds like a wonderful pet to have!

Thank you!

If I could make a suggestion, not intended to offend? Wait until you are done with college and your living arrangements are settled and then get a chin. Friends can turn out to not be friends and your chin will be left high and dry. Plus, that is a lot of responsibility for someone who doesn't own the pet. Plans change, they want to spend weekends away, people come over who may not be the most kind to your chin, etc., etc. My advice would be - wait and get one when you have your own place that you will be at year 'round where you know the chin will be cared for well.

I agree. Waiting till you are stable enough to care for the chin year round would be the best option for the chin. Friends are great until something goes wrong. Who pays the vet bill? what if your friend accidentally hurts the chin? Is your friend willing to watch the chin year after year until you are able to care for it? Thats a huge commitment for your friend.
