Roxy has now been with us a week and I LOVE her...makes truly remember how much I adored my previous chinchilla, Gizmo. I got Gizmo when I was in college. The pet store told me how chinchillas don't smell or make noise and were the perfect dorm room pet (not allowed to have pets so easy to sneak in).

Gizmo had an eye infection that I notice about 2 days after having him. It was so traumatic taking my new pet to the vet and having to put cream in his eye.

The pet store sold me a 20 gallon fish tank to keep him in. I had a book on how to care for him, but it must had been filled with wrong information. I gave Gizmo exercise outside of the cage....but not nearly enough. I was feeding him raisins nearly daily. I didn't know about how they could overheat.

About a year later I did get a new cage (it was given to me)...must have been build for a rat...multiple levels, but all wire shelves and ramps. I gave him good food, but no Timothy Hay...did get alfalfa. Gizmo got sick when he was around 6 years old and died at the vet's office.

Internet wasn't really available then and I thought I had done a good job and been a good owner and now I know so much I did was wrong...I was very lucky Gizmo lived as long as he did and I just feel terrible that as much as I loved him I wasn't a better owner. Makes me so angry that the pet store people were such idiots, too. :cry3:

It was the same here and it did hurt to loose two at the early ages of 2 and 2 1/2.

But don't beat yourself up, you did your best with the information you had at the time.

Don't beat yourself up too much...most of us made mistakes as new chin owners. I used to let my first chinnie Gregory run around in one of those "death balls" before I knew better. What's important is that you're getting the correct information now.
