hey guys, my partner and i have recently purchased our 2nd chinchilla and it was meant to be a boy.

We have had her for approx 6 weeks and then she had a little baby chin 11 days ago.

Unfortunately, the baby died last night.

I believe it became pregnant with its brother/father as the pet shop said it had only ever been in with its family and no other chins.

Would this have had some influence on the death? as we were watching very carefully over the last 10 days and keeping a close eye, it seemed slightly out of character last night, then this morning woke up to him/her dead :(

Any insight would be greatly appreciated as we will plan on getting a baby chin again in the future

If this was a baby born from a brother and sister, that could definitely influence it's health and cause significant congenital issues. Baby chins are most vulnerable to bacteria, viruses and anything else during the first couple of weeks of life. So it could be a combination of a genetically weaker chin with it being so young. Maybe the mother didn't produce enough colostrum...there's all sorts of things that can go wrong with newborns.

I'm sorry you lost the baby.

It would help to know what all you were doing for care. What kind of bedding do you use? Was the female separated from the male? How tall was the cage? Any ledges in the cage? Were you giving the mom any treats? What food do you give?
