We currently have flat leather collars on all of our dogs, but I was curious after talking to other people- what is the point of a rolled collar? Is there a benefit/advantage to have rolled or flat? Or do some people just prefer the look of them?

Supposedly, they are better for dogs with long, thick coats because the round shape helps to prevent tangled and matted fur around the dog's neck. But I think most people just get it for looks.

Just wanted to state something on the flea collars that I learned from here.

Those are actually toxic to both the humans and animals because of the chemicals on them, especially for little kids. Yeah, it's a bit more expensive, but just get some Frontline or Advantage or another topical flea preventitive.

Thanks for the info... we don't use the flea collars. We instead use the monthly flea and tick medications.

I agree with Therese, I've just heard them used for the longer coated breeds to help not have their fur tangle up.

Interesting, you'd hink the rolled coller would cause more problems with longer fur. If that's what they are generally used for then it wouldn't be beneficial for my dogs then... all have short hair. But I figured if they were more comfortable it would give me an excuse to buy new collars for everyone (I'm a collar freak, we have way too many!)

I just like the looks of rolled leather collars, myself. I've already got one picked out for when I can have my own dog, heh.

My experience with flat collars is that is breaks the fur giving them...ring around the collar. lol I use flat anyway, but never had any problem with matting or tangling, just fur breakage. I have mutts so it doesn't bother me.
