I read good reviews on this movie. I went to see it tonight, and I must tell you that is was, by far, the most depressing movie that I have ever seen.
I do have to concede that the acting was superb, however I must wonder what the whole point the writer was trying to convey, other than the one I took away from it: Life sucks and you will never be happy.
From the very beginning you get a sense of gloom due to the filter they used on the cameras. Instead of vibrant color you see a washed out muted landscape. The actors seemed like they wore little, if any, makeup. Kate Winslett, who looked beautiful in Titanic, looked like she was dying of cancer.
After I left the movie I felt hollow and numb, like all my emotions and joy were "scooped out" and I felt like a shell. I never have experienced anything like it from a mere movie. I was not the only one, as everyone leaving the theater had the same WTF look on their face.
They should have required you to check your shoelaces and belt before you went in.
