Remember, remember the fifth of November,
The gunpowder treason and plot,
I know of no reason
Why the gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.

Ok We being the fun bad (or awesome) Americans that we are we celebrated Guy Fawkes day with an effigy and firecrackers. Granted we shot our effigy with the firecrackers but thats cause it was fun... Any way enjoy our Guy Fawkesian shinanigans.

You don't know about Guy Fawkes day! Guy Fawkes... tried to blow up Parliment with King James the first and the entire Protestant, and even most of the Catholic, aristocracy and nobility inside. Gun Powder Treason.

Wiki it. Watch V for Vendetta. All good stuff!

V for Vendetta is one of my all time favorite movies/graphic novels. The holiday has always seemed a bit strange to me, kind of like calling 9/11 Saddam Hussein Day. I know it is celebrating the defeat of Guy Fawkes, but it is still a bit strange to me, naming the holiday after the bad guy. I didn't know people in the US celebrated it.

i never heard of it but you guys certainly know how to celebrate it! great pix. thanks for sharing. and posting the info. ya learn sumthin new every day!!

Guy Fawkes is probably the highlight of any British kid's year....after Christmas of course!
My parents used to build a small bonfire in the back yard, and we'd throw potatoes on it (for eating later heh), and we'd have boxes of fireworks to set off as well.
The neighbourhood kids used to hang over our back fence and watch...cause their parents either couldnt afford fireworks, or just refused to buy any for them. Anyways, my folks always used to let them in the garden, so we'd have dozens of kids milling around. A bit dangerous you might say, given the bonfire and sky-rockets etc, but there were always four of five adults around, and my parents were always really really careful.
There were always really really HUGE bonfires burned on the patches of disused land around our housing estate. Totally illegal of course....no one in charge of an eight foot tall burning pile of wood....I think that's why my folks had a more controlled celebration for us, and why they always let our neighbours kids join in too.
But anyways, it certainly was awesome fun. The place would reek of wood smoke for days afterwards, and there were burnt firework-ends everywhere you looked. Quite a mess!

We celebrate it here in NZ too, but to a lesser extent. I've found the chins and GPs dont mind the noise as much as I would've thought either!!

When I was growing up in England, we lived at near the end of and unpaved road and all the neighbors would get together an have a bonfire. We'd go around the neighbors and collect things for the guy; wood for the fire and clothing to make an effigy to burn. Potatoes were always thrown in the bonfire. OMG the best jacket potatoes always come from a bonfire. My great uncle lived in London and would bring the fireworks. It was a huge family and neighborhood celebration, second only to Christmas.

Ahhhh, the good old days.
