I apologize if this has been asked before. I tried searching for a long time, but I didn't find any answers.

Yuki has been barking lately. She only barks maybe two or three times, and then I go in and check on her, and she's sleeping cuddled up with Momo. There was no loud noises that would've scared her, the dog can't get to that room, and she seemed to be sleeping. Any ideas why she was barking?

I left the room and a few minutes later she barked again. I went and checked on her, and she still looked like she was sleeping. I stayed and talked to them for a minute in case she wanted attention. Then she didn't bark again until the next day. She barked a few times early in the morning, but when I checked on her, again, she was sleeping.

Is she having nightmares maybe? I just don't want her being upset or sad about anything.

One of mine talks in his sleep all the time. Scared the ever loving out of me the first few times but now I just ignore it. They must be dreaming.

i have read that chins will sometimes bark in their sleep. maybe it's a dream they are having that causes them to bark? maybe they are only half asleep and hear a noise that alarms them??? who knows, lol. as long as her behaviour when awake is not changing and there is nothing else that is concerning you, i wouldn't worry about it too much.

It was really loud. I'm not quite sure if it was barking or not. I've listened to sound clips of barking before. This sounded like a squeaky toy. I thought my dog was playing with one of her toys the first time I heard it, but then the dog barked and I knew it must've been the chinchillas, so I went in there and I saw her barking. But it was really loud and squeaky. It really did sound like a dog squeaky toy.

I have quite a few chins that bark just to hear themselves I swear! One of my first chins has always barked morning, noon and night. Sometimes she gets the other ones going even.

What you're describing sounds like the "chin alarm" sound of sorts. It's like a dry, repetitive cough of a squeaky toy, and whenever my chin does it (I've only heard it from Chinchy so far) it scares the crap out of me. From what I understand of Chin language, it's kind of a rallying call, signaling that their might be danger or a threat, or a "is there anybody there?" kind of call. If she's doing it in her sleep she may be hearing or smelling something, in the dream or otherwise, seems dangerous to her. Chins seem to have pretty sensitive senses, because whenever Chinchy does it I don't hear, smell, see anything out of the ordinary, and I always run up to his cage and he simply stares at me and goes about his business.

I have some "vocal" chinchillas, that I dub my cry babies. They seem to always have something to say about nothing! Unless I'm not handing out the sticks quickly enough, well then maybe they have a source of complaint! You probably have a cry baby like me! lol

could be most anything as listed above. Some times they will do it from their sleep, other times they will do it if something wakes them up. Can also be a result of digestive problems on a certin peice comeing out, which usaly passes. (conclusion reached from watching my one chin)

Both of my chins squeeked loudly while sleeping. I think that it is the warning cry and they seem to be just fine when checking on them. I wouldn't worry about it.
I also had a chin that barked, but this was a shorter, deeper pitch sound. It was more aggressive like a go away sound. We had a dog and she seemed to bark at the dog more than anything.

Yeah, she lets out about 3 squeaks and then stays quiet for the next 12 hours and then does it again. And she always looks like she's sleeping when I check on her. But I've noticed that when she does it, Momo is usually sleeping right next to her. So maybe Momo jumps up by her to cuddle and it scares her in her sleep?

I'll try not to worry about it. She always seems to do it at around 9:00 in the morning.

One of mine does it--can't ever tell who --every night. Sappho is on the top part of separated FN142, and Lao Tsu's on the bottom. She loves to pull up that end of her fleece so she can put her face down as far as possible and talk to her brother. He will in turn reach up as high as he can to talk back. All of a sudden I hear this shrill sound. I look over, and they seem fine.

For so long I was certain one of them was in pain. But they never seem to be. I believe what happens is one of 'em pisses the other one off,

Yuki was just barking again. I opened the cage door to put some hay in their hay box, and apparently she didn't like being woken up.

Does anyone's chins bark when they're woken up? She's never done that before. Makes me so sad!

my draken always has to bark every night. i think of it more that he is warning me of danger so i tell him thank you and good job and usually he quiets right down.

No but if I happen to--or intentionally, shh!--pet Sappho while she's sleeping in her tube, she wakes up with the most disgusted face. It's like, "As if?!"
;)

Buddha barks at me all the time if he's woken up. I think any noise will scare him awake. I'm also convinced that he has nightmares, as I'll check on him and find his ears back and his eyes closed.

my one chinny does his "is anyone there?" call when we're a bit late opening his cage for playtime. And when he does bark there's nothing going on in the cage, he could just be sitting on his shelf and looking at us.

Last night Yuki started barking around midnight, and she barked on and off until 4:00am! I don't know what was wrong! I sat in the room with her, and I even fell asleep in the room, but she was still barking.

I hope nothing's wrong!

When my chin barks, I bark back at him...and he usually stops, hehehe.

I did the search to find the answer to the same question.. Tuti Fruti Baby Love aka Sookie, seems to bark mostly during the day while shes sleeping or some times in the middle of the night while shes awake.. She doesnt run around, seem stressed persay and usually after the 5th time I coo at her "Its ok my baby, its ok." she stops and resumes whatever shes doing like nothing happened.. She actually just did it while I was doing my homework! I dont even run to the cage to fully inspect anymore, I just lift the blanket covering her cage and shes always sitting in her cube fast asleep... I am ever soo curious as to what prompts this from her..

My chin only barks when she's sleeping also. I have never found anything or known of anything she could have reacted to. At first, I was afraid there were bugs in her cage that were biting her or something (it was the only external danger I could think of) but I have yet to find a reason for her barking at any time. She'll do it in waves, too. She'll bark a bunch one night or bark every couple days for a week and then nothing for months. And then a random bark here...and nothing for months again. I don't get it and I think I never will...
