As the granddaughter of real Louisiana Cajuns and mostly cajun myself, I feel more than inclined to call bullsh*t on Rachel Ray.

it is IMPOSSIBLE to make a gumbo in under 30 mins.:banghead:
even reheating a gumbo takes that long.


and how do i know that not only did she do this wrong, but that it taste bad?:vomit:

it's simple.

In Cajun Louisiana there is one golden rule.

First, you make a roux.

If can't complete step one, you can't make anything.

I don't watch that show because I don't have time usually in the morning - I will see it for about three seconds while flipping through the channels to PBS for the dogs to watch (the dogs like TV!) One thing I did notice that I thought was funny is how skinny she looks on her magazine cover this month, but she is nowhere near that thin on the television show.

It's a shame when recipes are oversimplified because they don't taste anything like they should. Gumbo is one of those things that has a recipe that must be followed. In my family it would be sauerkraut or stollen that would be in that category. She had better not make a quick, half hour stollen...that would be blasphemy.

Exactly!! She is a blasphemer!! And she is MUCH chunkier then her photo shopped body in her magazine.
I don't like her and didn't want to watch but when she was all "I'm gonna show you a good 'ol fashioned gumbo like my family used to make." i HAD to see. She's not from anywhere near the south!! Errr.



and mishellyshel I take my cajun cooking very seriously. so here are a few pointers:
-New Orleans will over charge you for crawfish because tourist don't know that @ $17 you should be getting it in POUNDS not tiny single servings with a corn side.
-and anyplace that sell's "NEW ORLEAN's" style is cheating you. Giving you look, but not flavor.


I went to the landing in Natchitoches..and-for the lolz-tried their "shrimp and chicken gumbo"

taste like water and boiled shrimp/ the waiter wanted to know how it was...
to be nice i said "ok..."
"just ok??" *eyetwitch* did he seriously ask again?
lucky for him jeremy (who is from Lake Charles and family comes from Indiana-- "a yank"-lol) sent his happy butt away before I let him have it...
also...their crawfish ettouffe was gross and the fried shrimp was rubbery...
^_^ the coffee cheesecake with chocolate was yummy though

Brittny just the evoo drives me nuts. She says evoo and then calls it extra virgin olive oil. Say one or the other Rachel not both! And Stoop instead or soup or stew--seriously someone shut her up!!!

Evoo is the worst. It's like she's trying to be overly happy and overly nice, trying to be "one of the guys".

LOL I'm glad that you do. I know nothing about it really since I've never read her magazine. I just noticed that, wow, she looks like a model on the cover of the magazine but not so much on the show.

As much as I hate her voice, I read in a food magazine that she actually had a tumor on her larynx which caused her to sound funny. It has since been removed.

On a lighter note, I have tried some of her recipes, but not many of them are veggie friendly, and I don't really care for them.
