I had an email from someone who has a male and female chinchilla for adoption, they are free, but they want them to go as a pair. They mentioned taking the male to the humane society if they didn't find a home for them. I have no idea if they keep them in the same cage or not. They say the male is 2-3 months and the female is 2.5 years. I would love to have the female, but would then have a fourth chin. I could bring him home with me, get him on the right food and possibly find a good home for him. The person is waiting for a response. Would it be mean to take the boy in only to rehome him later? I have a large dog crate I would keep him in, separate from the female.

It would not be mean to foster him and find him a new home. If you do take them both, I would get him a cage. Only you can make this decision. Just know, that you may end up having him for a long time.

I wouldn't mind caring for a fourth chin. I have one worry though, can a 2-3 month old get a female pregnant? I will need to cancel my cage order and get one with smaller bar openings if that is the case. This person said their brother had them a total of one week. ><

Rescues do it all the time, take in and rehome chins. As long as you have room for him and time to find a home even if it takes months, go for it.

I called quality cages and ordered a baby safe cage. I need to run to my local walmart and get a water bottle. Will the Chins get depressed being separated? I refuse to keep a male and female together. Is a plastic dog crate okay for a few days? Quality cages should be sending out my order this week. So the female will have a new cage. I have a feeling this cage will be mostly plastic they are coming with. Wow, I didn't expect two chins. I'm stealing fleece from my boys, and food bowls from my mom. I'm also stealing chew sticks, food, and hay :p In case the female is pregnant should I put off getting a wheel? I know the baby is to young for one.

It probably isn't likely that she's pregnant, but it IS possible, so you'll need to keep her on pregnancy watch for about 111 days after you bring her home.

If the cage they come in has a bunch of plastic, you can remove it and add wooden shelves.
