Whe n the stones are taken from a quarry, do they need any kind of treatment before they are safe to chew?

And what are those black pumice, the volcanic stones? Are they safe too?

Pumice is pumice = porous volcanic rock. No treatment necessary (nor recommended), though there are some out there that are flavored. :))

I read that they should be washed well and then let "float" for 24 hours after being gathered.

I would think the black ones would be high in sulfer.... But I have no clue!

Sulfur is yellow. I would imagine the black comes from misc. ash and other burnt stuff. Pumice is not expensive, I'd just buy some you know is proven to be safe.
