Hello - I have been wanting Chinchillas since I was a little kid and my kids have wanted them for years so i have decided to take the leap and adopt 2. I have looked on craigslist and found two separate listings that peaked my interest. I contact both owners. The are both pairs. The first pair are 11 months old (one dark grey and one grey and white) and i was told that they are friendly but one is on the shy side but the other will sit with you once he is out of the cage. Neither have bit. the ad did not say what sex they were and when i asked i was told the they were told one male and one female but they have never had babies so he was assuming they were both male.

The second pair are 5 month old males (one grey and one tan). The woman said they are friendly, energetic and curious and that they rarely bite.

If money was no object I would take all four because it breaks my heart that people don't want them anymore.

Does anyone have any opinions on which pair may be better for me to adopt. I want them to be able to bond with me and my children. Any direction would be great. thanks so much.

Teri

Go see both pairs and choose the pair that you like the best. As far as the 11 month old chins go, they are only 11 months and may not have bred yet, or she could be pregnant and the owner doesn't know she is. Assuming that she is a male or can't breed when she is only 11 months old is not a good idea. You need to check the genders yourself to be sure.

Don't trust that the first pair are 2 males! Actually, don't trust that any are a certain gender just because the ad says they are. I say learn how to tell the difference for yourself and then go see them. After checking the gender, just go with your gut feeling on deciding! Best of luck!

I have to agree with Shooper, at least 50% of the chins coming in the rescue are sexed wrong by their owners, so its always good to be able to tell for yourself. It's helpful if you can check when you get there, so that you don't end up with a pair of "males," and one day find a baby in your cage.

I would go meet them both and see what you think.

Thanks so much for the suggestions. I am going to see both pairs and then go from there. I am wondering if the younger ones will have a better time bonding with us. Cant wait to see all of them. I will let you know how it goes.
