Hi everyone - I have a few questions about housing both female and male chins.

1) I know that a female chin and a male chin can not be housed together, but are they able to play together?

For example: You can have a a female and male dog playing as long as you watch them and make sure one does not mount the other.

2) Is there a danger of them mating through cage bars? One will live in the bottom of a critter nation cage, the other will live in the top - But, when one is out and the other remains caged, I want to know if there is a concern of them doing something threw the bars?

3) Let's say I am interesting in two chins mating and producing off spring. Where is a good source to learn how to safely mate two chins?

Thanks for the help, as usual! :)

1 - No, it takes seconds for them to mate
2 - If they have any type of access to each other, the risk is there for mating even through bars.
3 - Breeding is serious business since you are playing with lives. Before considering to mate chins, attend shows, meet with breeders and discuss in person the idea of breeding. If attending shows is not an option for you, you can look up for a responsible, reputable breeder in your area that can mentor you. Depending as to where you are located in NY, I know of a few that can help. PM me and I will be happy to send you their names.

They can not have play time together. They can breed in a matter of seconds. They can breed through bars and its advised at least 4 inches between cages. As far as breeding tips... check out the FAQ and let us know if you have more specific questions.

Alright, thanks guys! The two chins will be housed separately (one on the first level of the Critter Nation cage, the other on the second level).

And wow, I had no idea that they could mate through the bars. From what I've seen - it takes time for them to mate. I'll make sure that the chin who is out and playing is supervised so no "hanky panky" happens with the other.

Thanks for everything!

PS- Is it possible to have one of the chins fixed? Is that a safe option?

It can be done if you have an experienced vet but its no usually advised since chins do not handle aneth very well. Its much easier to just get the same sexes so there is no worry.
