I just purchased a 9 week old female chinchilla yesterday. Her name is Shelby. We have an all wire cage. Are there any common household items that are safe to use as flooring? I heard chinchillas need something soft to stand on or else their feet can get infected. I dont want to put anything in that can possibly hurt her.

Lining a cage with fleece is the most popular option. You can also use pine bedding.

I had a wire bottom cage and worried about Idgie hurting her feet. Not sure if this is what you mean, but I got a piece of lucite for $4 at the Menards (Home Depot, Lowes, etc. would have it too). It is actually the cover for a flourescent light fixture in a drop ceiling. (They have them by the drop ceiling tiles.) You can bend it a little to get it in the cage and you can score it and snap it to make it the right size. (But be careful b/c it does crack very easily! Wear eye protection.) And then I just put her bedding on top of it. For cleaning, I just take the bedding out & wipe the whole bottom down with water and vinegar. It is actually easier to clean this way than trying to clean all those wires.
Not sure if my idea will work for you, but wanted to throw it out there.
