I need to get a bigger cage for my chinchilla. I was looking at this Critter Nation cage:

I know some people have it, and need a specific question answered: is it possible to block off the entrances between the upper and lower tiers? I would like to get a cage where this is possible, so that I could clean the lower level without having to get someone to take him out of the cage and babysit.

On that note, does anyone have any suggestions for cages besides this one? I'd prefer to spend $200-250, get a large, tall cage, with a solid (not wire) bottom, with the ability to block off certain levels to isolate him. Additionally, I would actually prefer a cage that had two separate doors, instead of one large door, so I have more control when trying to take him out of the cage.

Thanks!

I have a Critter Nation and a Ferret Nation. You can use the shelves and the ramps that come with it if you buy fleece covers for them. It does make cleaning a lot easier and the large doors haven't proven to be a problem with any of my four. Of the two, I prefer the Ferret Nation. The bars on the CN are narrow and can break more easily. The spacing also prevents you from being able to stick a finger through the bars to pet them, which I'm not a fan of. If you check your local Craigslist, you may be able to find a used one. Just scrub it down with white vinegar and you're good to go.

If you're looking for decor ideas, be sure to check out the Ferret Nation Club thread as well. I hope that helps!

i also have both a Ferret Nation and a Critter Nation. to answer your specific question.... the Critter Nation comes with a metal wire ramp that you can clip up into a postion that blocks the other level. so you can clean one level of the cage, keeping him in the other. it is HIGHLY suggested that you cover this ramp with fleece so chinnie legs do not get caught in between the wires (easily done).

as far as other cages.... don't bother. you are on the right track with the Ferret Nation / Critter Nation line. stick with it.

differences between the 2 cages: FN bars are mostly vertical, CN are mostly horizontal. FN bars are 1 inch spacing, CN are 1/2 inch. FN is usually found to be a little cheaper.

similarities: same size. both can block off the levels so they are separate. Bass's pans fit in both. Doors are the same on both.

both are great cages, and over any other tpye of cage, i would recommend them. of the 2? i might prefer the ferret nation. but its a close call.

Petsmart carries the Critter Nation in stores, and both times I have tried, they have price-matched a printout from a website I brought in. my suggestion... hunt around online and print out the best price you can find. It can get down to $200. print it out and bring to your local petsmart.
