I know there is alot of controversy over plastic. I've been told that certain items such as a pvc tube is safe for them, since its really hard plastic and then others say dont let them near it. i'm planning on covering it w/ fleece but how unsafe are they?

I use 3 inch in some of my cages with new born kits to give them a place to hide, or get away from others.
Never had a problem, and there's very few chew marks visible.

We have 4" and 6" PVC pipes in our cages and at playtime - they've never been a chewing issue for us (and one of our boys loooves to chew). Should be fine, especially if it's fleece-covered. Just keep watch for the first few days to make sure there aren't any problems.

I use it both covered and uncovered with no problems. They each get a little inspection when they're first put in, but after a little nibble when nothing happens to it, he leaves the thing alone. Of course, I watch him carefully to make sure he *doesn't* somehow manage to get a chip off of it, but so far, nothing.

In my opinion, anything can be harmful to your chin. Anything you introduce to your chin, just be sure to observe for a day or so for any excessive chewing. If your chin chews through the fleece and there are a few nibbles on the PVC, I would just take it out.

You can get one of those wooden tunnels as an alternative to the PVC tube (Forchinate Chins sells them; My chin likes hers, I switch the fleece tube for the wooden one during the late spring/summer).

I have a PVC fleece covered tube too. My chin just gives hers an intro nibble on the fleece every time I change the fleece cover and then just leaves it alone; This is normal for my chin. Not all chins are the same. There are some chins that will chew PVC like any other chew toy, so just stay alert!
