I have suspected my female violet Aurora (2 yrs old) is pregnant. She is exhibiting all of the "typical" signs of pregnancy plus I've recorded in the past month that she has gained about 40 grams of weight. I weigh her at the same time once a week when I clean her cage. When I was holding her gently before weighing yesterday I noticed that in 5 days she gained 10 grams and I felt a little something under her belly. I gently lifted her and blew some air into her fur and could clearly see a nipple. My question is how long are the nipples usually? I would say that her nipples yesterday we about 1/2-3/4 of a CM long Example: |---|. Not yet as long as her fur but I felt like this was a sure elongation. Are they usually smaller than that when not pregnant? Or is that normal length? If this is obvious elongation I'd assume that this means she's only a few weeks shy of delivery?

Nipples can't tell you how long before she might deliver but they are one sign of possible pregnancy. There's no real way to know an exact date and most of the time they will have them and you find them the next day. Just make sure you have her in a baby safe cage now and try not to handle her too much.

Nipples are about the least consistent thing when it comes to one chinchilla's pregnancy vs another. There are so many variables such as whether it is her first litter or not.

Agreed, likewise, that kind of weight gain may not even be indicative of pregnancy. The last two females I had litter both gained around 200g...they only had one kit each! I've had other females gain 200g and give triplets. So, a 40-75g weight gain around here doesn't really get noticed.

On the flipside. I've had larger females that only gain 50grams and give me triplets :p For the smaller chins though I've always had decent weight gain as you mentioned. Just my chunkers like to hide their pregnancy heh.
