I was checking on my chinchillas on Saturday and noticed blood on my chins cage shelves. Took a closer look and found that his rear feet are cracked and there looks to be an enlarged area on his feet. I cleaned his cage and switched his bedding to a soft paper kind. No wire in the cage and I've removed all hard perches and toys (mostly safe wood branches for chewing) except the wooden shelving, so I could minimize any irritation.

Earliest I could get a visit with the vet is on Wednesday. I haven't applied anything to it. Is there something I could be doing to ease the pain or help him at this point? Or just keep it from worsening? I fear it may be already pretty severe and I want to do everything I can before I can get him to the vet.

Thanks for the advice. I have never had this problem with a chin before.

It looks like he cut his paw pad pretty badly. I'd worry that it could get infected. It doesn't look like bumblefoot, but there could be infection behind the wound. The dried, cracked appearance of paw pads is normal. Your chin has calouses that look a bit malformed - that can happen in older chins or chins that have been sitting in wet shavings.

Thanks for the response.

Unfortunately his cage wasn't cleaned out weekly like it should have been the past two or three weeks (I've been sick), but he will be on constant watch. I usually clean the cages once a week, sometimes every other. I'm not sure how he cut his paw. I'm going to be cleaning it today and wrapping it with some vet wrap and apply neosporin to it to keep it until he sees the vet Wednesday.

He's a 4 year old large male. I'm not sure if he's overweight, just big. I only feed pellets and hay.

You probably should give his shelves a thorough look over.

One of my old chins chewed her shelf quite a bit, and left a sharp bit on the edge. She hurt her foot on that, so I had to sand the sharp bit down.

Hope the lil guy gets better soon!
