so i want to get a chinchilla. but ive read a lot about how they love to chew. so i would like to know what would be the best reccomended litter to get. Also i know they need a big cage, how big can the cage be? is there a size max of a cage?. the place where i live it gets quite hot in the summer between 80-100 degrees exeeding 105 degrees the most.and in the winter it sometimes gets down to the 30's degrees. so what is the best temperature to have a chinchilla in? also i read about having the play room in the bathroom or in a pin, what kinds of toys are recomended and should i start instaling padding? how well do they get along with other pets? such as rabbits?. also i hear its best to get them theyr own little den/house, how big should that be? also i read alot of high quality pellets, which one is best reccomended? also every pet needs grooming, so does a chinchilla need grooming? if so how many times? thanks to who ever answers my questions. i know its a lot, but im going to be new so i want to be VERY prepared. :]

If you use the search option at the top of the page, you'll find that pretty much all of these questions has been asked and answered many times. Most new chin owners have the same questions that you do.

Take just a few minutes to read through the new chin owner section, the housing section, the health and hygiene section, and the FAQ's. I think you get a lot more out of learning when you find it yourself, plus, there are several threads on each of these topics and you'll really get a good representation for the information you are seeking from many different view points.

If you can't find what you're looking for through reading the various posts, then post your questions here and we'll answer them for you.

Welcome to CnH and congrats on your upcoming new addition!

I just got Edgar three weeks ago and we spent two months of reading every web site on chinchillas there was. I also would just sit and read forums for hours to see what others had gone through. Once we were ready to get Edgar we were lucky enough to find a good breeder. That was wonderful because we got to interact and learn. She was also kind enough to say if we ever had an emergency we could call her 24/7.

If I were you I would just start looking at this forum. I have found that the information is very good and the people really care. I've never had to ask a question so far other than a something just about Edgar as there is more info than I've needed. It's wonderful.

For you my only concern would be hot weather so you should read up about heat and consider air conditioning just for the chin.

I hope you have as much fun learning as I am!

With temps that high you will need a backup air conditioner, because they just go out sometimes and the chins won't live long in the heat, a fan doesn't do anything.
