i'm planning on buying this cage for my new chin because the one i have is too small(the poor thing has barely any room to run and stuff.. :[ stupid petsmart people).. anyway, i was wondering, since it has wire floor, what can i put over it so my chin's feet won't be hurt by it? and is there anything else i need to know about this cage? any/all help is appreciated! thank you! :]

Although I dont necessarily believe that a wire floor hurts a chin's feet at all I would agree that that wire is not appropriatly sized for a chin. I would do a fleece liner but since theres still the possibility of slipping...maybe lay a large piece of pine wood over it then putting the fleece on top of that? Since you will probably be taking out the plastic shelving (I think thats plastic right?) anyway.

One of the pictures looks like someone completly took out the wiring on the bottom and just laid fleece down but you will have to see how that works on that cage.

You might wander the web to find out or ask the person that is selling it. It is possible that the wire mesh can be removed and that the chinchillas can be on the tray instead. My only concern if it can be taken out would be whether or not a chin would be able to push the pan out of the cage and escape. If there is no lock to keep it in once the wire is removed you could probably fabricate something yourself to keep the pan from coming out. It doesn't look like a bad cage overall. I worry with the wire about the wear and tear on a chinchillas feet. I do not know why they make small animal cages with wire mesh like that anyway. You try standing barefoot with all your weight on wire. It's going to hurt after a while and the wire is going to work like sandpaper against the bottoms of their feet. Then there's also the whole risk of them getting feet or toes caught in the mesh as they bounce across the surface. People have had to amputate chinchilla's legs, feet, toes due to wire mesh, ramps, levels and wire wheels. It's just not worth the risk.

If you look in this section of the forum you will see a thread dedicated to the "Fiesty Ferret" cage and you can look to see how others members have set theirs up! Check it out!
