Do you have to have a permit to own a chinchilla in Illinois? I didn't think you did because they sell them at pet stores, but I was told you do. Thanks for your input in advance.

I don't believe you need a permit to own a chin in any state. You may need one to sell them in certian stated, not sure on that though.

On the other site, one of the other Illinois members had a chin being "babysat" at a pet shop she worked at, while going out of town.
While there, the chin supposedly bit a unsupervised child, although there were signs all over against putting fingers in the cage. There was no blood, and the kid never even cried, to his Grandmother, who had been warned, previously, and yet again!
When the mother heard this - she called police, health department and her lawyer, trying to get the chin put down.
She went ahead and got a health certificate from her vet, and the health department issued statments to this woman about how chins cannot get, nor transmit rabies, but I guess she continued to call everyone! After the member got a third call from her [the mothers] lawyer, and told him she'd fight it to the end, everything backed off!
At no time did anyone mention anything about permits, or licenses!

I have never heard of any state requiring permits to own a Chinchilla. I know there are some counties within certain states that have laws for the number of animals you can have. But no permit or license requirements

I actually have heard of needing to a permit or special permission to have an exotic pet (which chinchillas fall under). I used to live in Illinois and overall the state doesn't have anything, but individual counties/townships/cities can and do have exotic animals permits. The best thing to do is check with your area and call them or look up online to see what rules they have.

Definitely not in Cook County, Illinois. Never heard of needing a license for a pet chinchilla.

I've checked downstate here too, and you don't need one in Macon, Christian or Sangamon counties either.... But that could vary from town to town as well... Your best bet is to call your city officials and check with them.
