As most of you know, Altair had his leg amputated. When I got him home and he started moving around, I saw that his penis wasn't sheathed. I figured that he got some hair stuck when they shaved. So I took the cone off and he cleaned himself-all was normal. 2 days later, it was out again. I took off the cone, he cleaned, and it was ok. Repeat again, and then yesterday again. I figured that since his penis head was a bit dry looking, I'd get KY and fix it myself. Last night he was not holding still and really crazy, so I did it this morning. His penis wouldn't really come any further out than it is in the picture. The head looks really dried and a bit crusty. I know the picture isn't the best, but holding a chin and taking this without seeing is harder than I thought it'd be. If anyone can tell me what I should do, I'd appreciate it!! When I take his cone off now, he goes right for the stitches. I know they're healed and itching so I don't blame him, but he won't clean anything on himself.

Is he on any pain relief? Those stitches look quite tight to me so I suspect they will be irritating him.

You need to get someone to help you fully retract his penis out of the sheath, check it right to the base for any trapped fur, lubricate it with KY jelly & then put it all back in - you may need to hold the tip for a few seconds once it is back in the sheath to make sure it all stays put.

Chins can prolapse if they are run down or feeling ill - you need to make sure Altair is eating, drinking, peeing, pooping ok & that he is getting prescribed pain relief.

He was only given metacam for 3 days. He's not been on anything but anti and pro biotics. He's had a stitches check and I was told everything looks great. I'll have to talk Adam into holding him so I can use both hands on him.
He's been eating, drinking, peeing, pooping, playing, hopping, and running like normal. You'd never know anything was abnormal when the cone comes off.

Would cutting out play time so he can focus on healing be helpful? I'd imagine running and jumping could put pressure on the stitches.

Hope your baby is well soon.
